Speaker: Emma Crosby - Presenter/Broadcaster & Strategic Partner for Casey Wishart & Partners

When you're the one standing on stage, you feel a responsibility to deliver a compelling event.

To get that right, here's what I do.

When moderating a panel, I treat each speaker as an individual interview. Then I am able to see the areas of commonality and controversy on the panel.

Having said that, some of the greatest panel discussions are when spontaneity rules. I always allow for those moments when speakers maybe go off piste and riff off each other, or a member of the audience.

Talking of the audience, they are the most important people in the room, so don't forget them.

Invite them to participate with live polls, shows of hands or Q&A.

And, I know that I would say this, but think about using an external moderator. Or, if your moderator is in-house, make sure they're well trained and across their brief.

It really is the best way of making sure there's good time keeping, good content and the audience is kept engaged.
